BC Municipalities Vote to Tell Province to Ban GE Crops and Animals

This morning, in an unprecedented step, the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), at their Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, passed a resolution “that UBCM ask the British Columbia government to legislate the prohibition of importing, exporting and growing plants and seeds containing genetically engineered DNA, and raising GE animals within BC, and to declare, through legislation, that BC is a GE Free area in respect to all plant and animal species.”

Now you can support the upcoming tour of BC this fall by Thierry Vrain and Shiv Chopra who will tell you all you need to know about why we need to stop GE crops and animals. Please donate to support the tour through the donate button on the right hand side of this page. We need to raise $10,000 to make the tour of 20 communities work. For more see below.

Already 14 municipalities in BC have declared themselves GE Free Zones, and 10 Official Community Plans of Regional Districts have come out against GE crops, as communities across the province mobilized for a ban on GE crops.

“We’re overjoyed with our success,” said Teresa Lynne of the Society for a GE Free BC, a volunteer non-profit group, “We’re so grateful to all the councilors who heard our concerns and took this amazing step on our behalf. The provincial government needs to legislate this ban and then ask the federal government to do the same.”

“This was possible thanks to the actions of so many passionate and committed people. Every action made a difference,” said Lynne, “We all want to protect our families, environment and food system from the risks of genetically engineered crops and foods.”

“This is an unprecedented victory for grassroots communities,” said Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, “Finally we see a level of government in Canada debate this issue and respond to peoples’ concerns.”

Supporters of the UBCM motion gathered almost 7000 signatures on online and hardcopy petitions, and protested yesterday morning outside the UBCM meeting location.

On Thierry and Shiv’s tour, see below:

GE Free BC and Greenpeace Vancouver Local Group are excited to announce a Canadian Fall and Winter Speaker’s Tour to spread awareness, educate, and share concerns about genetically engineered foods. Genetically Engineered Foods & Human Health will feature Dr. Thierry Vrain, ex-genetic engineer with Agriculture Canada for 30 years, and now and organic farmer, and Dr. Shiv Chopra, ex-scientist for Health Canada and tireless protector of the food supply worldwide.

Please donate to support this tour. Even a small donation can help.

  1. Best news I’ve heard in years. I hope it happens sooner rather than later as it can’t be anything but good for B.C. growers and producers and we, as consumers, can be comfortable with anything grown or raised in B.C. As an example, this year I did not buy one single cob of Chilliwack sweet corn because I know they are growing some GM cattle corn in the Fraser Valley so how can I know that it hasn’t been contaminated? I see this as a huge win-win for all.

  2. Reblogged this on The Deeper Side Blog by Gurdeep Stephens and commented:
Here it is again! Can’t get enough of good news!!

  3. What I’m also excited about is the impact this will have on our BC govt and then our Federal govt. I see a CANADA GE•GMO FREE! This will affect the US as well.

  4. This is fantastic news! Hopefully the rest of Canada can follow suit, but it may take more awareness and help for farmers. Keep on getting it out there, GOOD JOB!

  5. How good does that make us feel. We can make a difference, Finally we can get back to eating healthy and keep our environment healthy.. We Win all around.

  6. I read your comments and I am filled with a goodness. It seems maybe the bigger picture might be over looked. Yes this is a win and its a great one thus far ( it must continue ). The further this wave goes, IT WILL reach the shores of Monsanto, DuPont, Bayer to name a few and when that happens… There is a saying. You can’t fight fire with fire. This is an evil like no other, and the course of action taken to finally disassemble these titans needs a unique approach. Think out side the box’s, unconventional and harmonious is maybe the best way. They have all won thus far by playing the game that they own, time to take away there home field advantage.

  7. This is huge. BC meat and produce would be in demand from other provinces as well. My concern is even if the provincial government okays it, will the Harper bunch? I have my doubts since they are in bed with Monsanto every bit as much as the FDA in the States. Even though several states have elected to go GM free, the federal guys are putting together a bill to take that right away from them. Personally, I have no confidence in Harper doing anything right.

  8. I am so proud of BC for getting this on the legislative table – and hopefully getting GMO’s off of our dinner tables! Let’s take it to the next level and make it happen BC!
