All BC to go GE Free next month? Help us make this happen.

All BC to go GE Free????!!! Talk to and write to your Mayor and Councillors now

All BC municipalities get together once a year and this year their UBCM Convention will be from the 16th-20th September in Vancouver.

Metchosin, which is a GE Free zone, is putting forward a resolution at the Convention asking for all BE municipalities to support  banning GE crops and animals. Here is the resolution:

“that UBCM ask the British Columbia government to legislate the prohibition of importing, exporting and growing plants and seeds containing genetically engineered DNA, and raising GE animals within BC, and to declare, through legislation, that BC is a GE Free area in respect to all plant and animal species”.

  1. Found an organic icecream here produced in Ontario and no phlegm I am happy to say.

  2. Does this include banning imports of meat and milk products produced by GE feed?

  3. There will be opposition of course, claims that it’s too expensive to test imports for GE ingredients. But gov’ts will likely pass on both the costs and responsibility for testing to the producers who will then pass it on to consumers. But I think consumers will pay more for this.

  4. Do you think people will be alright with not being able to purchase their favorite Cola, for example, because of GE corn syrup? There are so many beloved brands that there will be a consumer revolt.

  5. Are we gonna put 7-11’s and Mac convenience stores out of business? Just think about all the snack foods they’re selling: foods with GE corn: nachos, corn chips, pop corn and then there’s all the foods sweetened with GE fructose corn syrup. Let’s be clear. Are we asking to ban these imported big name brand snacking foods? Do you think the public will support this? have other GE free municipalities banned these stores and their products? Are they still selling Cola in North Van?

  6. Saying somewhere is a “GE Free Zone” is deceptive. People will down their cola and cheesy nacho snacks thinking they’re safe. The truth is it’s somewhat GE free.
