Urgent Action Alert ? Support GM Food Labeling – Take action before May 5, 2010

Tell the Minister of Health that Canada must support the right of
countries to label genetically modified (GM) foods. Send a letter
instantly from

Canada could work to shut down negotiations on GM labeling at the UN Codex meeting next week in Quebec City.

May 3-7, governments will negotiate food labeling standards at the UN Codex meeting, including recommendations on GM labeling. The US is trying to stop the negotiations from continuing, and Canada may also try to end the negotiations.

Developing countries want support from Codex for their right to label
GM foods. The US and Canada want to make sure this doesn’t happen
because Codex recommendations on GM labeling could protect developing
countries from challenges brought through the World Trade Organization.

Canada and the US also argue that GM foods are not any different from
foods created through conventional methods. This is not supported by
science, including Codex’s own food safety guidelines!

Despite polls that show over 80% of Canadians want mandatory labeling of GM foods, the Canadian government continues to bow to intense pressure from the biotech industry and refuses to label GM foods.

Help protect the rights of developing countries to label GM foods!

One response to “Urgent Action Alert ? Support GM Food Labeling – Take action before May 5, 2010

  1. This is a comment I sent recently. The letter was addressed to the Minister of Health and copies were sent to appropriate officials.

    Dear Minister Aglukkaq,
I firmly believe that at next week’s international UN Codex meeting on
food labeling in Quebec City (May 3-7) Canada ought to take a strong
position in support of the ability of individual countries to label
    genetically engineered (GE) foods.

Health Canada has not made its position public, but I understand that
Canada plans to oppose the recognition that each country can adopt
different approaches towards the labeling of GE foods. If this is
Canada’s position, it does not reflect the will of Canadians, who are
overwhelmingly in favour of the mandatory labeling of GE foods, and it
fails to support the majority of countries who already have labeling
regimes or want to establish them with the support of Codex

Moreover, the Canadian government continues to argue that genetically
engineered foods are similar to those created through conventional plant
breeding. In fact the process is entirely unprecedented and potentially
dangerous to human health and well-being. It is contrary to the interests
of Canadians and has resulted in inadequate regulation of GE food in
Canada! Canada’s position is not supported by independent science,
including Codex’s own food safety guidelines, and it should not be used
to block consensus at the Codex meeting.

Canada should also immediately establish mandatory labeling of all GE
foods. As you are no doubt aware, all consumer polls conducted in Canada
show that over 80% of Canadians want mandatory labeling. Despite this
strong and consistent demand, our government has continued to oppose
    mandatory labeling.

Please do support mandatory labeling of GE foods in Canada and instruct
the Canadian government delegation to next week’s Codex meeting to
support the ability of other countries to label GE foods as they see fit.
The Canadian government should play a positive role in next week’s

I trust your response will be favourable.
