Vancouver Island declares itself a GE Free zone

51 municipalities yesterday supported a motion brought forward by Metchosin to make Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities a genetically engineered free zone – from Victoria to Comox to Campbell River to the Sunshine Coast and to Ucluelet!!!!

For the communities covered, go here http://avicc.ca/about-the-avicc/avicc-members-2/

Being a GE free zone means that citizens have said no to genetically engineered crops. A resolution is not a bylaw, but it makes everyone understand the level of opposition to GE crops.

Thanks and congratulations to all the local activists involved in this amazing victory for sustainable agriculture.

Please consider making a donation to GE Free BC through the donate button on the right hand side of this page. We are 100% volunteer with no staff or administrative costs, so all of your donation will go to our campaigns to promote sustainable agriculture and against GE crops in BC.

Why Gwynne Dyer got it wrong about GE crops

Gwynne Dyer had a piece in the Georgia Straight supporting GE crops in general and GE rice in particular.

http://m.straight.com/article/36913

Here is our response, which we sent to the Straight:

In his article on Golden Rice and the necessity of genetically engineered crops (4th April) Gwynne Dyer makes a number of unsubstantiated claims.

Dyer claims genetically engineered (GE) crops are necessary to feed a growing global population. But about 60% of GE crops, particularly corn and soy, are used for animal feed, a very inefficient way of using resources to feed humans. And in North America, where about a third of the population is obese, we throw away 50% of our food – so why is it we need more food exactly? Continue reading

New study shows a hidden viral gene in commerical GE crops

This should only make us more concerned about GE crops. We will continue to follow and keep posting on this story.

Published January 21st in Independent Science News:

Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene In Commercial GMO Crops
by Jonathan Latham and Allison Wilson
Synopsis: A scientific paper published in late 2012 shows that US and EU GMO regulators have for many years been inadvertently approving transgenic events containing an unsuspected viral gene. As a result, 54 different transgenic events commercialized internationally contain a substantial segment of the multifunctional Gene VI from Cauliflower Mosaic Virus (CaMV) within them. Among these are some of the most widely grown GMOs, including Roundup Ready Soybean (40-3-2) and MON810 Maize. The oversight occurred because regulators failed to appreciate that Gene VI overlaps the commonly used CaMV 35S gene regulatory sequence.
The authors of the paper, working for the European Food Safety Authority, concluded that functions of Gene VI were potential sources of harmful consequences. They further concluded that, if expressed, the fragments of Gene VI are substantial enough for them to be functional (Podevin and du Jardin (2012) GM Crops and Food 3: 1-5). This discovery has multiple ramifications for biotechnology. Foremost, there is the immediate question of GMO safety and whether the 54 events should be recalled, but secondly, the failure implicates regulators and the industry in a circle of mutual incompetence and complacency.

Europe maintains oppostion to GE crops

EU freezes approval of GM crops to 2014
(AFP)
BRUSSELS — The European Commission has decided to freeze the approval process for genetically modified food crops through the end of its mandate next year while it works towards an agreement with EU member states.
“The Commission, if it wants, could launch a procedure to authorise the farming of one GM soya and six corn strains… but it won’t do so,” said Frederic Vincent, a spokesman for Health Commisioner Tonio Borg. “The authorisations for farming are frozen.”

Methcosin asks Vancouver Island to go GE Free

After passing a resolution to go GE Free, Metchosin is now asking the whole of AVICC, which is the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities, to go GE Free at its AGM in April.
This would be similar to the resolution brought to the Union of BC Municipalities last September where all of BC endorsed a resolution against the GE apple.
If you life in the AVICC area, and want to support this move, let us know at gefreebc07@yahoo.ca or commenting on this blog. GE Free BC is running campaigns throughout the AVICC area and we can put you in touch with our local campaigners.
Many thanks to Metchosin Council.

Come and hear Dr. Thierry Vrain, an expert on genetically engineered crops, and learn about the affects of GE foods and what you can do about it.

Thierry was a genetic engineer in agricultural research, heading a Canadian Government Biotechnology Department. In his presentation he will explain the hopes for the technology 25 years ago and from recent scientific research, the evidence to question the success and status of this technology. He counters claims that engineered crops are safe, increase yields, decrease pesticide use and are benign to the environment. Thierry now has an organic farm on Vancouver Island.

Also hear about the Provincial Campaign against the genetically engineered apple being developed in the Okanagan, and the plan to turn Vancouver into a genetically engineered free zone. There are currently ten GE Free communities in BC, including Richmond.

Organised by Mobius Café (a GE Free zone) and the Society for a Genetically Engineered Free BC

Why GE crops won’t feed the world

Much of the hype around new technology centres around solving problems such as hunger or disease. But anyone who knows anything about hunger also knows that distribution is as much a problem as production. We now have 1 billion people who are obese, and 1 billion people undernourished – in other words a totally dysfunctional global food system based on profit rather than social equity and environmental sustainability. GE crops are central to this dysfunctionality.

If GE crops were about feeding hungry people, why do a majority of them (maybe 60%) go to cattle feed, which is an enormously wasteful way to use land and water – read Eleanor Boyle’s excellent book on this and why we need to eat less meat: http://www.newsociety.com/Contributors/B/Boyle-Eleanor

If our food was distributed equally there would be more than enough to feed us all. The proof – in Europe and North America we throw away 30-50% of the food we produce.

See Genetic Roulette and hear Thierry Vrain in Sooke, 12th December

Showtime is at 7 p.m. at the Edward Milne Community School theatre.  Admission is by donation.
www.awarenessfilmnight.ca

Thierry is a geneticist and organic farmer on Vancouver Island who knows more about the science and politics behind genetically engineered foods than most.
The movie Genetic Roulette presents  evidence that points to GE foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates, especially among children.  Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, autism and infertility are just some of the problems implicated.  It also provides meticulous research on how biotech companies continue to mislead legislators, the public and safety officials about the dangers of GE foods and offers practical suggestions for avoiding GE ingredients which can be hidden in our food.
